When successful attorney, Mitch Bright (Daniel Baldwin), returns home after more than 20 years to the small town of Trapper Falls, Alaska he runs into his old high schools rivals: the Reed brothers, Dan (Ted McGinley) and Greg (Brad Stein). Dan is building a new platform for the town’s traditional nativity scene, but he is the mayor of the town, the platform is being built with city money, and it’s on city property. To top things off: Dan is even married to Kristen (Nancy Stafford) the girl both Dan and Mitch liked in high school. The first thing Mitch does is file a legal injunction against the nativity citing separation of church and state. The second thing he does is decide to run for mayor against his main rival Dan; Dan has been the mayor for years. Mitch accuses Dan of forcing his Christianity upon the entire town, then Mitch goes on a rant about the arrogance and hypocrisy of all Christians.

The 1968–69 student-led resistance movement against Italy’s fossilized traditions eventually developed into acts of terrorism, culminating on 12 December 1969, when 17 people were killed and a further 88 injured in a bomb attack at the Banca Nazionale dell’Agricoltura in Milan. The investigation of the horrific case was entrusted to police captain Luigi Calabresi. He and his superiors were convinced that, as in previous attacks, anarchists were behind the carnage. Yet further developments indicated that the trail led elsewhere. The background to the massacre on Piazza Fontana was so complex that it proved ideal material for a novel. The central character is naturally the policeman, whose life was severely marked by the case thereafter. The filmmakers didn’t have to romanticize: the reality was so bizarre that it was more a case of having to condense the facts, rather than invent any part of the plot. The result is a crime drama which also gives us a faithful image of Italy at that time.

Paulo Morelli’s film is a pacy, bloody thriller that pays warm tribute to a diverse cross-section of American directors including Quentin Tarantino and Michael Bay.

Bullets zing across the screen, heavy artillery is deployed at all times, and Morelli makes great use of the twisty favela streets during some frantic chase sequence. Silva and Cunha, who both had roles in CITY OF GOD, carry the picture with impressive ease, and while CITY OF MEN isn’t an official sequel to Meirelles’s lauded picture, it does serve as a neat continuation of that film’s unshakable portrayal of the violence that has beset so many young lives in the slums of Rio de Janeiro.
