12 Monkeys is a tv series adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s 1995 feature film of the same name. The movie starred Bruce Willis as James Cole, a convicted criminal in a post-apocalyptic future where the Earth’s population is forced to live underground after a deadly virus. In a bid to earn a pardon, Cole uses the imperfect science of time travel to help collect information on the virus released by the Army of the Twelve Monkeys. Feature film producers Chuck Roven and Richard Suckle of Atlas Entertainment — one of the production companies on board the Universal film — submitted the pitch, which is being eyed as a 90-minute backdoor pilot that would eventually lead to a straight-to-series order in a fashion similar to Syfy’s Battlestar Galactica. Terry Matalas (Nikita, Terra Nova, Star Trek: Enterprise) and Travis Fickett (Nikita, Terra Nova) will pen the script, with 24′s Jon Cassar on board to direct the project, which hails from Universal Cable Productions.

A risky heist misfires and the boys blame Smurf, sending shock waves through the family, in the Season 2 premiere. Also: Baz deals with being a single parent; and Deran plans for the future.
The series centers on 17-year-old Joshua “J” Cody, who moves in with his freewheeling relatives in their Southern California beach town after his mother dies of a heroin overdose. Headed by boot-tough matriarch Janine “Smurf” Cody and her right-hand Baz, who runs the business and calls the shots, the clan also consists of Pope, the oldest and most dangerous of the Cody boys; Craig, the tough and fearless middle son; and Deran, the troubled, suspicious “baby” of the family. Also prominent are Nicky, J’s steady girlfriend, and Catherine, Baz’s de facto wife and the mother of their 3-year-old daughter, Lena. It isn’t long before Josh is pulled into the family’s life of indulgence and excess, but he soon discovers that it’s all being funded by criminal activities. Joining the family comes with more danger and excitement than he might be ready to handle.
