Flaws in the American justice system are explored and exposed through emotional, in-depth examinations of multiple death row cases. The series looks at cases from all angles, returning to the scene of the crime, re-interviewing witnesses, and delving beyond the details of the crime and court proceedings to take a deep look into the personal stories of the subjects, seeking to trace the path that led them to their place on death row.

With incisive, compelling storytelling, The Last Defense gives voice to those who can no longer be heard. Season one investigates the cases of a Dallas housewife convicted of stabbing two of her sons to death, and a high school athlete convicted of shooting a father at point blank range in front of his daughters. Meanwhile, their attorneys race against the clock to get new trials before their execution dates are set. Both have been on death row for nearly two decades each. Both may be innocent.

Season 01 , Episode 01 – “Darlie Routier: The Crime”
The premiere of the docu-series, which explores and exposes flaws in the American justice system via examinations of the death row cases of Darlie Routier and Julius Jones. In 1997, Darlie Routier, wife and mother, was sentenced to death for the brutal stabbing murder of her two young sons. In 2001, Julius Jones, a 21-year-old African-American college student with an academic scholarship, was sentenced to death for the carjacking murder of a white father of two. Both maintain their innocence.

Season 01 , Episode 02 – “Darlie Routier: The Trial”
Amid a media frenzy, Darlie Routier’s trial begins in the small, conservative town of Kerrville, Texas. Prosecutors know they will be up against a formidable adversary when Darlie’s family hires one of Dallas’ top attorneys, Doug Mulder. Also: Darlie relates on what happened that night, an account investigators say was fabricated after Darlie staged the crime scene. The state’s investigators will present its evidence pointing to Darlie as the killer.

Season 01 , Episode 03 – “Darlie Routier: The Woman”
The trial of Darlie Routier heats up. Facing one of Texas’ top defense lawyers, the prosecution argues that Darlie’s actions and demeanor are not that of a grieving mother but of a person capable of murdering her own children. The defense strikes back by questioning the state’s theory of motive and the characterization of Darlie. However, when the prosecution presents a video of Darlie having a party at her children’s gravesite, and it seems her fate is sealed.

Season 01 , Episode 04 – “Darlie Routier: The Fight”
Darlie’s current defense team explores alternative theories that the jury may not have fully considered and lays out their strategy for a retrial. With Darlie’s execution impending, she and Darin reveal the agony of love under a death sentence.

Season 01 , Episode 05 – “Julius Jones: The Crime”
The Julius Jones case is examined. In 1999, the 19-year-old former high-school basketball and football player was arrested days after a businessman was gunned down by a black man in a white suburb of Oklahoma City. At the time of the murder, he was a student at the University of Oklahoma on a partial academic scholarship, attempting to walk on to the basketball team. Here, he tells his version of events while federal public defenders discuss what they claim is a miscarriage of justice.

Season 01 , Episode 06 – “Julius Jones: The Trial”
The State calls their star witness, Christopher Jordan, who testifies he was there when Julius pulled the trigger. Julius and his family watch as his defense takes this last opportunity to save him, but there are missed opportunities to hear Julius’ side of the story, and a critical piece of evidence is never shown to the jury. The clock is ticking for Julius, but two witnesses have come forward in his favor since the conviction, and he now holds out hope thanks to his current lawyers.

Season 01 , Episode 07 – “Julius Jones: The Fight”
With Julius Jones at the top of the state of Oklahoma’s list of impending executions, federal public defenders Amanda Bass and Dale Baich are in a race to win a new trial. When new evidence comes to light, there may be hope for Julius. The Season 1 finale.
