Every now and then a quality television film comes along. Generation War is a bright light in an otherwise production line of poor offerings… This is brilliant in so many ways. From the skillful direction and intriguing storyline to masterful character development, from magnificent set recreations to convincing performances from its actors, this is a winner.
Generation War (German: Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter, literally “Our mothers, our fathers”) is a German World War II TV miniseries in three parts. The series tells the story of five young German friends, on their different paths through Nazi Germany and World War II: As Wehrmacht soldiers on the Eastern Front, war nurse, aspiring singer, and Jewish tailor respectively. The narrative spans over five years starting in 1941 Berlin, when the friends meet up for a last time before embarking on their journeys, enthusiastically vowing to meet up again the following Christmas. The story’s conclusion is set in a time shortly after the end of the war in 1945/ 46.
When the series first aired in Germany, each episode garnered around 7 million viewers. The Economist stated that hardly any German TV drama ever caused that much public debate. The film’s portrayal of Nazis as “Others” separate from and different from most Germans provoked disbelief, and was criticized as historically inaccurate. While some critics commended the series as well-crafted, other critics were outraged by alleged characteristics of the story, including the portrayal of the Polish anti-Nazi resistance as fanatical anti-semites, the trivialization of the persecution of Jews by Nazi Germany, the hiding of the German role in the Holocaust, and the whitewashing of the difference between non-German victims and German perpetrators.
The three 90 minute parts are titled A Different Time (Eine andere Zeit), A Different War (Ein anderer Krieg), and A Different Country (Ein anderes Land).
On the eve of the German attack on the Soviet Union five friends meet in Berlin. What was supposed to recur on Christmas became the last episode of their youth as their lives start to change dramatically during World War II. This is the end of the world as they knew it.
While Wilhelm, a young Wehrmacht officer and his younger brother Friedhelm serve in the same platoon on the Eastern Front, Charlotte volunteers as a nurse in a military hospital. Greta starts a career as a singer, while her Jewish lover Victor is deported to a concentration camp and joins the Polish Partisans.
At the end of the third episode the audience is led to believe that the main characters were real persons, as their years of life are given as follows:
• Viktor 1921–1997
• Greta 1921–1945
• Charlotte 1921–2003
• Friedhelm 1923–1945
• Wilhelm 1920–
