Set against the backdrop of Napoleon’s 1812 invasion of Russia, “War and Peace” is a story of passion, romance, scandal and deceit surrounding the rising and falling fortunes of five aristocratic families – the Bezukhovs, Bolkonskys, Drubetskoys, Kuragins and Rostovs – in the waning days of imperial Russia.

Season 1, Episode 1
Russia, 1805. Napoleon Bonaparte’s French army has invaded Austria, drawing Russia into the war against him. Everyone in aristocratic Russian society is rattled – except hot-headed Pierre Bezukhov, who admires the French emperor’s politics. Pierre is an outcast in society, and the illegitimate son of one of Russia’s wealthiest men. But now his father is close to death and his scheming relatives are vying for the old man’s fortune – though they expect Pierre to be left with nothing.Pierre’s dearest friend Prince Andrei Bolkonsky is excited for war with Napoleon. For him it offers a chance to find purpose in life by fighting on the front line. Unhappily married to a beautiful socialite, Lise, he plans to leave her behind at his fierce father’s remote country estate and seek military glory for himself. The army under Andrei’s wise mentor General Kutuzov expects a swift victory. But when the French unexpectedly prove their military might, Andrei is thrust into a dangerous battle.Pierre’s other great friend is Natasha Rostova – a beautiful, lively young woman growing up fast and desperate to experience more of the world. When she sees love blossom between her brother Nikolai and his childhood sweetheart Sonya, she is inspired for the first time with romantic thoughts of her own. As the men ride off to war, Natasha and Sonya are left behind to wait and wonder if they will ever return.

Season 1, Episode2
The Russian army is safe after a marginal success at Schongrabern that just keeps the French at bay. Andrei and Nikolai are both excited to tell stories of their involvement, until the sobering realisation strikes that a far more terrible battle awaits them. The tsar himself, confident of victory, comes to Austria to command the troops. But Andrei’s wise old commander General Kutuzov is concerned that Napoleon is setting a trap. Back in Russia, Natasha and her family are desperate to hear news from Nikolai. Pierre is married to Helene but struggles to settle into their life together. With his daughter happily coupled off, Prince Vassily’s thoughts turn to marrying off his son Anatole. They travel to meet Andrei’s sister, Marya, at Prince Bolkonsky’s country estate. Marya is tempted by the unexpected prospect of romance, but her father is less convinced of Anatole’s intentions.

Season 1 Episode3
Pierre fights a duel with Dolokhov. Astonished at the outcome, he tries to change his life for the better. Helene takes advantage of his absence to re-enter society and considers an exciting new relationship. Andrei, meanwhile, is depressed and full of remorse. On his father’s advice, he builds a house in the country where he shuts himself away – until an unexpected encounter offers him a second chance at life. At the Rostov house in Moscow, the count is struggling to rein in his spending. Natasha is surprised by the advances of an unexpected suitor and wonders whether she will ever find true love. Sonya is also faced with a proposal, while Nikolai lets an untrustworthy friend lead him down a dangerous path. He looks forward to going back to the army – but when a peace treaty is signed with Napoleon, forging an alliance between the Russians and the French, his future looks less secure.

Season 1 Episode4
Andrei is in love, but his father is set against him marrying Natasha and insists on a long engagement to keep them apart. Natasha is overjoyed when Andrei proposes but shocked by his decision to delay the wedding and travel abroad for a year. She distracts herself by spending time on the Rostovs country estate, hunting and getting a taste of Moscow peasant life. But when the time comes to return to Moscow society, temptation crosses her path, and she finds her love for Andrei tested. Nikolai’s romance with the impoverished Sonya is also under pressure. Countess Rostova wishes her son to marry into wealth and has a new candidate in mind with a huge fortune behind her. Anna Mikhailovna is on the lookout for an heiress to marry Boris, too – although he is more concerned to move up in society. His unwitting patron is Pierre, who is growing steadily more depressed about his failure to find meaning in his life. Marya is unhappy too, when her father’s behaviour takes a cruel turn for the worse.

Season 1 Episode5

Chaos descends on Moscow as the French army attacks the city. The Rostovs realise they are in danger and flee for their lives. Natasha finds herself with an unexpected travelling companion, and sees a last chance to make amends. Sonya is asked by the countess to make a sacrifice for her family. Traumatised by his experiences on the battlefield, Pierre resolves to stay behind and fight the invaders, and as he struggles through a hard winter, the scenes of horror and kindness he witnesses change his outlook on life. Last in the series.

Season 1 Episode6
The French army makes its way into Moscow and chaos descends on the city. The Rostovs have no choice but to flee and Natasha is stunned by an unexpected fellow traveller whilst Sonya is asked to make a massive sacrifice for her family.
